Not sure why it is not printing anything including alignment pages. All pages come out blank. The three color cartridges are emtpy. Do I need the color cartridges to be able to print black in draft quality?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

HP Printers are designed in such a way that if any one of the cartridges is empty, the printer will not print.

HP Printer consumes all the ink in the printer to print the best quality.

Replace all empty ink cartridge and try to print.

I purchased and installed all four cartridges (three color, one black) and still nothing is printing. What is strange is that most of the color ink levels show more than half of the ink is used. There is no trace of even trying to pring in draft or grayscale. Pages are coming out completely blank. Really frustrating. Is there anything I have to do with the software?

Clean the printhead

The printhead could be clogged, and you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore print quality. Use an automated tool from the printer control panel to clean the printhead.

  1. From the printer control panel, open the Setup  menu.

  2. Open the Printer Maintenance menu.

  3. If necessary, open the Tools menu, and then touch Clean Printhead.

    A test page prints.

Example of the printhead cleaning test page

  4. Examine the test page.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. If necessary, repeat these steps for the third cleaning cycle.

      NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done.

Try to print.

Thanks for this. I printed four test pages and it only printed the color rectangles. I am now getting the persistent error contact HP 0x610004a. I keeps saying to "turn off properly and turn back on. If problem perssists, contcat HP support."

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I see that now you are getting 0x610004a error message. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.

Just to check if there is any obstructions inside the printer. Are you able to move the carriage freely.

In the meantime, i would suggest you follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP OfficeJet Pro 6900 Printers - 'Carriage Jam' Error

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

There was nothing jammed and the carriage moved easily. I was not able to do much else since the printer kept saying there is an error. I processed my Square Trade warranty and received a check. I have not had luck with Canon and now HP printers since the HP model 720 printer from a while ago. I have not tried Brother brand printers so at this point I'll give it a try. It is a shame printers seem to be so delicate now a days. There is so much emphasis on installing the software and utilities that come with the printer, it seems more attention needs to be paid on the durability of the hardware. Is there I good reason I should try another HP printer? If not, I am moving on.
