This problem happens with Chrome browser, so that's probably the cause, and I've opened a support ticket with Google, but I will share it here in case others are having the same issue, or have ideas on any role that the HP printer driver might be playing.
I often save Gmail messages or web pages as PDFs (e.g., to document confirmation of a purchase or bill payment.) For the past few days, when I try to save a Gmail message (or any web page) as a PDF, the screen flashes briefly with the file selector modal for choosing where to save the PDF, but then that modal disappears, the browser tab turns grey, and seems frozen. The only way to escape is to click another browser tab, which behaves fine, and then I can close the frozen tab by clicking the X at the top. I have exited Chrome and restarted, and also powered down the Mac and restarted, but the problem persists. Safari browser is able to export web pages to PDF and save locally with no problem.
