@Paps1012,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post that you're having issues while printing in black after changing the connection on your HP Photosmart printer. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you tried to clean the ink cartridge contacts as well as the printhead?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to follow these document below which has the steps to clean the cartridge contacts as well as clean the printhead.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • Clean, lint-free swabs that will not come apart or leave fibers

    • A sheet of paper to place the cartridges on

  2. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

  3. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the access area.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

  5. Press the tab on the front of the cartridge in to release it, and then pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the slot.

  6. Hold the cartridge by its sides, and then find the electrical contacts on the bottom of the cartridge. The electrical contacts are four small rectangles of copper-colored metal.

  7. Inspect the contacts for ink and debris buildup.

  8. Wipe the contacts with a swab until no debris remains on them.

       CAUTION:

    Be careful to wipe only the contacts. Do not smear any ink or debris elsewhere on the cartridge.

  9. Turn the cartridge on its side, and then place it onto the sheet of paper.

  10. Locate the electrical contacts in the cartridge slot. The contacts are four copper-colored pins.

  11. Wipe the contacts with a swab until no debris remains on them.

  12. With the contacts facing down, slide the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it clicks into place.

  13. Repeat these steps to clean and reinsert any of the other cartridges.

  14. Close the cartridge access door.

I have cleaned the cartridge heads and the black ink is very light almost not readable.  I believe the cartridge head must still be dirty.  I am going to try using Canon HP cleaning kit with syringe and nozzle hose to do a more focused and better cleaning.  The last step would be to buy a replacement ink cartridge for $25.

@Paps1012,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

As I understand you have followed the instructions and unfortunately nothing has helped to resolve this issue.

I would suggest this could be a possible hardware failure with the printer.

I'm sending out a Private message with the information you need to get this sorted,

Please check your Private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile
