Hi @bruceabrams,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 7164 printer is not printing properly, even though it indicates that the cartridges are full and you can hear it attempting to print, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the problem.

Check Cartridges and Paper:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and securely seated in their respective slots.
  • Make sure that there is enough paper in the paper tray and that it is loaded correctly.

Verify Ink Levels:

  • Check the ink levels through your printer's software or control panel to ensure that the cartridges are indeed full.

Print a Test Page:

  • Most printers have a self-test or diagnostic page option. Use this feature to print a test page directly from the printer's control panel. If it prints correctly, it indicates that the printer hardware is functioning properly.

Clean the Printhead:

  • If your printer has a printhead cleaning utility, run it to clean the printhead nozzles. Clogged nozzles can result in blank pages.

Align the Printhead (if applicable):

  • Some printers have an alignment process that ensures the printhead is correctly aligned with the paper. Check your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform this alignment.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. Visit the HP website and download the most up-to-date drivers for your specific printer model.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can help resolve minor glitches.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Visit the HP website to see if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve printing issues.

Inspect for Hardware Issues:

  • If none of the above steps resolve the problem, there could be a hardware issue with the printhead or other components.

Try a Different Document/Software:

  • Sometimes, printing issues can be related to the specific document or software you are trying to print from. Try printing a different document or using a different application to see if the problem persists.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the issue with your HP ENVY 7164 printer not printing properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
