HP officejet Pro 8600 now reads"print failure" and "General Printer Error"  .   Will not print or do anything.   Turned on and off, reloaded new color cartridges. Still the same reading.

Hi @LeRoy24,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Step 1: Check for obstructions in the carriage path

  • Clear obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer.
  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer.
  • Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find.

Obstruction inside the printer

  • Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. If the carriage is stalled or docked to one side of the printer and you cannot move it, continue with these steps.

Moving the carriage from side to side

  • Close the carriage access door.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn the printer on.
  • If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer

  • Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  • NOTE:
  • HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  • If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.

To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Elohi,

Thanks very much. I will let you know outcome, but here in Houston, much of the city’s power is down!  That includes mine. So it may be a week (or more, hopefully less) before we will be “up” again. Thanks again for detailed answer.

Elohi,

We finally got power back on in our neighborhood.

I have gone through your suggested trouble-shooting series very carefully. Did not work.   Further suggestions?

Further info:  I had replaced the HP color cartridges 3-4 week ago.  Printer worked fine.  Then I replaced black cartridge when it ran out. The printer problem showed up then?  Could the black cartridge (larger cartridge) have anything to do with problem?

If no other suggested trouble shooting, then I need to ask: is this 8600 printer worth trying to service/fix?  I know it is "old," but has received only lighter use.

I also really  hate to throw away a set of new (expensive) cartridges in buying a new HP printer! Any that use same cartridges?

Suggestions are welcomed!

Elohi, your help is appreciated.  Any further suggestions?

Brian

I have gone into HP support, performed each tasks 3-4 times, cannot get print failure fixed. Cannot get into main screen on printer either, that comes up and will not go away. NO obstructions, printer has ink, etc.
