photosmart 8400
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

my beloved photosmart 8400 printer stopped printing from web applications this week,  I can print test pages and did the clean cartidge process with no problems, I'm not sure if the recent microsoft upgrades are responsible, I shut it down and pulled the cartridges and still nothing.  I did the the remove and add computer.  Should I do a system restore?  I need a step by step instruction on getting the settings correct for use as a networked printer.  Any help truly appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which helps in resolving common printing and scanning problems such as missing or corrupt print drivers, connectivity issues etc.

Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93

If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.)  Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Print a diagnostic page

  1. Make sure the main tray is loaded with full-size media, and that the tray selector is in the main tray position (the lever is all the way out).

  2. Press and hold Cancel, then Save. Hold both buttons pressed for about five seconds.

  3. The Service menu opens on the printer LCD screen. Scroll to Customer Diagnostic Test and press OK. The diagnostic page prints.

Let me know if you see color on this report.

Hi @ederkel, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @Betty0610, but she is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Have you tried checking with a different USB cable?

Have you tried printing from a different device? Does the issue persist?

As you mentioned when you print a test page the printer is printing slow.

Check the printer preferences

Selecting certain paper types or printing in Best quality can slow print speeds. Print with plain paper in Normal or Draft quality for faster print speeds.

  1. Search Windows for printers, and then click Printers & scanners in the list of results.

  2. Click your printer, and then click Manage.

  3. Click Printing Preferences.

  4. Click the Paper/Quality tab.

  5. In the Paper Type field, make sure Plain Paper is selected.

  6. In the Print Quality field, make sure Draft or Normal is selected.

  7. Click OK or Apply to confirm the changes.

  8. Try to print.

Reset the printer

Resetting the printer can resolve some types of slow printing issues.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

    NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂
