I have a flashing "?" on the control panel. i have tried resetting the network,  i removed power cable from unit t so it could reset. replaces ink cartridge, replaced paper in tray. i have run out of things to try. the Manuel does not even say what it is for.

A flashing "?" on the control panel of an HP printer usually indicates an issue that the printer doesn’t recognize or needs user action.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Check Printer Display for Any Error Messages

  • Press any buttons on the control panel to see if an error message appears.
  • If no message appears, continue with the next steps.

Check Ink Cartridges

  • Since you already replaced the ink cartridges, remove them again and reinstall them firmly.
  • Make sure you’re using genuine HP cartridges and that the protective tape is removed.

Check Paper Tray & Sensors

  • Remove the paper stack and reload it properly.
  • Make sure no paper is jammed inside the printer.
  • Check the paper sensor inside the tray to ensure it is not stuck or damaged.

Reset the Printer Again

  • Unplug the power cable from the wall socket.
  • Wait 5 minutes, then plug it back in.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the "?" is still flashing.

 Check for a Firmware Update

  • If your printer connects to Wi-Fi, update the firmware:
    • Go to HP Smart App > Printer Settings > Update Firmware
    • If your printer has a USB connection, check the HP website for the latest firmware.

 Perform a Hard Reset (If Issue Persists)

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the power cable back in and turn on the printer.
