Hi @jane1130,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is not printing in color, there are several possible reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Check Ink Levels:

  • Ensure that there is sufficient ink in all the color cartridges. You can check the ink levels through the printer software or on the printer's control panel.

Color Printing Settings:

  • Make sure that your print settings are configured to print in color. When you go to print a document, check the printer settings to ensure that color printing is selected.

Printer Driver:

  • Verify that you have the latest and correct printer drivers installed on your computer. Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause printing issues.

Print Quality Settings:

  • Check the print quality settings in the printer properties. Sometimes, the print quality may be set to grayscale or black and white, which will result in monochrome printing.

Printer Software:

  • Ensure that the printer software on your computer is correctly installed. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the printer software to resolve any issues.

Paper Type:

  • Make sure that you are using the correct type of paper for color printing. Some printers may not print in color on certain types of paper.

Color Cartridge Issues:

  • If the color cartridges are old or have expired, they may not produce accurate colors. Consider replacing the color cartridges with new ones.

Clean Print Heads:

  • Use the printer's maintenance tools to clean the print heads. Unclean print heads can result in poor print quality.

Check for Updates:

  • Check for firmware updates for your printer. HP often releases updates to fix bugs and improve performance.

Test Print:

  • Print a test page from the printer itself. Most printers have a built-in function for this. If the test page prints in color, the issue may be with the computer or software settings.

Default Settings:

  • Ensure that color printing is set as the default option on your computer. This is especially important if you are printing from multiple devices.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
