Hi @Alastair12

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, It sounds like you're encountering an issue with your HP OfficeJet 8120e printer where it’s stuck on the "Firmware Updates" screen and nothing happens when you press Next. This can be frustrating, but there are a few steps we can try to resolve the issue. Here’s what you can do to fix the problem:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Start by turning off your printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer, and also unplug it from the wall socket.
  • Wait for 1-2 minutes to allow the printer to reset.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it back on. Check if the issue persists.

2. Cancel the Firmware Update

  • If the "Firmware Updates" screen persists, look for a way to exit or cancel the update through the menu options (e.g., a Cancel button on the screen, or by pressing the Home button to return to the main menu).

3. Check Printer's Network Connection

  • If your printer is trying to update itself via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, ensure that it has a stable network connection. Poor or intermittent connections can cause update failures.
  • If you’re connected via Wi-Fi, you might want to check the connection by printing a network configuration page (you can do this by navigating through the printer’s settings menu).
  • If the connection is weak, try moving the printer closer to the router or use a wired connection (Ethernet) if possible.

4. Perform a Factory Reset

  • Steps to reset:
    1. On the printer, navigate to Settings or Setup (the gear icon).
    2. Look for an option like Restore Defaults, Reset, or Restore Factory Settings.
    3. Select it and follow the prompts to reset the printer. This will erase any custom settings, so be sure to write down any network details before performing this.

5. Check for Firmware Updates Using HP Smart App

  • Sometimes the firmware update can be done through the HP Smart App on your computer or mobile device, which may bypass the screen issue on the printer itself.
  • If you haven't installed the HP Smart app, you can download it from the Microsoft Store or App Store.
  • Once installed, open the app and connect your printer.
  • The app should notify you if any firmware updates are available and allow you to install them through the app.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
