Changing the router on your network is not usually difficult, though changing from one setup to another might require that you enter some of the required information for your network.
The Website Support how-to and troubleshooting documents are well written and for the most part do not expect you to be "technical". Fortunately, there are lots of documents. If something is not explained so you can understand it, there is usually another resource.
Printer's Website Support > Category "How to"
There are a large number of helpful documents in this category including (and not limited to those mentioned in this post).
Topic: Wireless, Networking & Internet
Sub-Topic: Wireless Connections & Networking
You mentioned "pushing buttons" in an attempt to resolve the connection. WPS works if your router supports the feature. Read the following to understand this method of Wireless Connection:
Connecting an HP Printer Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
Standard Wireless
No Connection after Router or Wi-Fi Settings Change
Document includes "how to" clear and set up your Wireless settings.

thank you so much! It took several tries but finally got it. The key was restoring the printer to network defaults. It still would not connect thru WPS but I was able to use Set Up Wizard and it connected. Thanks again!
