My printer is working fine from both computers Win10 and Win7 over a local network.
However if I use the printer assistant software to make changes to fax settings, the assistant shows a dialog box that says "authenticatin required" and has a form to enter user name which is pre-filled w/admin and a password box that is blank. What password and user name is required?
Thanks, Don

Hi DVortex,
Thanks for your help. I was able to resolve the authentication issue by simply entering the wireless password for my router. I was confused for a while as to what was needed as I could change everything from the printer front panel and the Printer Assistant, but not any of the fax settings when using the Printer Assitant except for sending a fax.
Thanks again, Donaldo24

Hello, @donaldo24 – Hope you are well 🙂
Thanks for your continued participation in HP Support Forums! I would be glad to be of your assistance 🙂
Going through your post, I understand that the HP Printer assistant is asking for username and password. It’s indeed a rare situation you are having 🙂 To assist you better I need to know the following details:
- If you access the fax menu from the printer control panel, are the settings locked or can you change the settings?
- Are you trying to setup the Digital fax or the regular fax?
- Is the issue happening on both Win 7 & win 10 systems?
If the settings are accessible from the printer control panel, then we have to assume that the issue is with the HP support assistant. The best step to resolve the issue is to reinstall the same. Here are the steps:
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click on http://hp.care/2dI2YcK download and install the printer drivers.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
Have a great day 🙂
