HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

my 6978 is connected to my mac USB port. If the printer goes to sleep I cannot get anything to print on it unless I turn it off and on again. The printer's display panel shows no errors. My print items are visible in the print queue and it says "printing" and the progress bar reaches 100% but nothing prints. After I turn it off and on again and re-queue my print item it does print. However, after some time the printer goes back to sleep and I'm back where I started having to reboot it just to print 1 page.

I downloaded HP Easy Start but this has proven to be useless. It says it is preparing for device setup but it will sit like that for hours then finally it comes back with "cannot establish connection for online setup" despite the fact that my mac is always connected to the internet. If I select "continue 0ffline" it says there are no updates for my device.

It was much easier when HP provided drivers as downloads intead of having to go through the Easy Start application that does not do what its supposed to do.

If I run HP Smart it says the printer is detected but is not installed completely. When I try to complete the installation it says "there was a problem during installation" then it instructs me to go into Printers and Scanners setup and add the driver manually. Since the printer already exists I have to proceed by adding it as a new printer again. When this completes, HP Smart still says the printer is not installed completely.  I'm going around in circles.
