Just installed new printer on dell inspiron with windows 8.1, after hooking up and running software the lcd screen keeps saying checking for printer updates. If I hit the x on the screen it goes to printer error saying there is a problem with the printer and says to turn off then back on with all the lights flashing. If I do that it does the same thing>
Help! Do I have to call hp or what?

I tried your suggestions and got the same results, so I contacted HP Support via chat and we went thru the whole
procedures again and they determined that the printer needed replaced. I received the new printer this past Friday and
it set up perfectly.
Thanks for your help though.

Hi @ejsretusn,
Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I see you are setting up your HP Officejet Pro 6835, the control panel is flashing saying it is checking for printer updates, but it does not do that, and when you power it off the same things happens when it powers up.
Let's go ahead and attempt a Hard Reset on the OJ 6835:
1. Unplug all cables and memory cards from the printer. Unplug the power cord, directly from the back of the printer while the printer is still turned on.
2. Unplug the other end of the cord from the power source.
3. If there is a power module on the power cord, disconnect one end and reconnect it.
4. After 60 seconds, plug the cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or battery backup as they can cause the printer to lose basic functionality over time).
5. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
6. The printer should automatically power back up. If it doesn't, turn it on with the power button.
7. Try making a photocopy (if your printer is an all-in-on printer) before connecting any other cables to the printer.
8. Connect any other needed cables to the printer.
Please continue here after the Hard Reset: 'Turn Power Off then On' Message Displays on the Control Panel
I will watch for your reply.
Thanks,

Can you tell me HOW you got Chat with an HP representative? I can find no mention of online Chat Support anywhere!
To add to the difficulty, I am based in Switzerland, and the single number that exists for customers to call does nothing but take you through a bunch of references to online help pages - ALL OF WHICH I have read and tried - then hangs up on you. It seems like customers in Switzerland get no realiable help at all.
I have been struggling with a brand-new All-in-one printer and brand-new cartridges for a few weeks now - all it does is spew out flawlessly blank pages, although the platen moves back and forth, so it's clear that the printer software "thinks" it is printing what it was told to print.

Hello @swisspen,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.
If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, this post has instructions.
