Although I have set Tray 1(A4 in my case) to 'default' on the control panel, the printer will print from Tray 2 (A3 in my case) by default.
I have to go to 'Printer Properties' , eg from MSWord, where paper source is stated to be Tray 2, and reset 'Paper/Quality'>'Paper source' either to 'tray 1' or to 'Printer auto select' to force the printer to print from Tray 1 (A4).
How can I correct this?
The driver installed is:
HP Officejet Pro 7740 PCL-3
Version 20.79.01.6733

I read your quick response. It is awesome to hear from you and your patience and efforts are admirable. Thanks for the update.Your excellent technical skills, immense patience and immaculate attitude are laudable. Kudos to you for that.:)
If the problem still persists after trying all the steps from my previous post which includes uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office and checking in MS Word if the issue is corrected, Then try these steps:
- Create a new local user account as an administrator by following steps from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/instantanswers/5de907f1-f8ba-4fd9-a89d-efd23fee918c/create-a-loc...
- Then restart the computer and login to the new user account
- Then download and install the full feature software from the HP support site from the same link mentioned in my earlier post.
This should do the trick for you.
- Otherwise, please backup all your important files and perform a push button reset of Windows 10 on your computer by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04742289
- Then download and install the printer drivers from the HP drivers page.
This should correct the situation for you.
Now you are a valued HP customer and it has been amazing working with you and an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. Now trust me, I've done all I can to assist you and also kept your best interest in mind. 🙂

Good Day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I read the post regarding issues with not able to select the correct tray in MS Word. I will be delighted to assist you here.
Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after a recent software or OS update?
- Does it happen with all Apps or only with MS Word?
For now, please try these steps:
- Please perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://hp.care/2eXmLFT and follow instructions from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer”
- Then check by printing from MS Word if the correct tray is selected.
- Also, try other apps like Adobe Reader or WordPad and check if the correct tray is selected.
- If it works form other apps then MSWord or MS Office needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled and it should get fixed.
- Also, check in control Panel devices and printers under printer properties if you could change the tray selection to Auto Select.
- No check for issue resolution.
If the problem continues, then uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers at the root level by following these steps:
- Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
- Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
- Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
- Click on print server properties.
- You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
- Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
- Restart the PC.
- Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
- Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
- It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
- If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
- Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
- Restart the PC again.
Then download the latest full feature driver from https://hp.care/2rj9c6n and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
This should fix the issue.
- If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2o3acvH
- This should resolve the issue for you. There is an associated YouTube video that should help.
- Please update the printer firmware also by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD
This should do the trick for you.
Check this User Guide link: https://hp.care/2ttitfl and follow instructions from page 13 on how to work with trays. You could lock one of the trays also.
- For further assistance please check this link: https://hp.care/2rj9ief (HP Printers - Print Driver Settings Guide (Windows)
- This link gives all your printer settings. Check the section “Paper type, size, and input tray settings”
Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Thanks for your informative posting, from which I will try to remedy the situation.
To answer your questions though:
As I recall, I've had the problem since I first installed the printer in Jan. this year. I'm currently licensed for and am running Win 10 Pro,Version 1709 (OS build 16299.371) and I think that this may be where we're going wrong. I have another machine on the network running Win 7 Pro, Ver 6.1 (Build 7601: SerPac 1), where I have set the default to <Printer Auto Select>, and this operates correctly.
The problem seems to persist on machine 1 for all MSOffice apps (MSOffice Pro Plus 2013), except for Outlook which chooses the correct paper feed.

Thanks for the help (not to mention the effusive praise, which makes me suspicious).
A hard reset on the printer, followed by resetting printer properties, both from the control panel and from within MSOffice apps, then a reboot of the computer worked.

I read the response. I am glad the issue got resolved with a hard reset and changing the printer properties in control panel did the trick for you. I am happy for you. It is music to my ears. The effusive praise that you speak about is not praise. Dale Carnegie once said, "Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise".
You deserve the praise if you call it so for the painstaking efforts and technical skills displayed to resolve the problem. I have done my best to assist you in this regard.
If the information given by me helped you in the right direction, then to simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. Take care and have a blessed year ahead. 🙂
