Every time the printer powers on it displays "49 Service Error/Turn off then on" on the touch screen and never shows the menu.  It's worked fine for years.  It's only ever been on the network with an Ethernet cable connection.  The USB port has never been used and the printer does not have wireless.  It has a phone line connected but it's been rarely used.  The error and startup problem happens with all the cables removed.   Startup has been tried after an off/on cycle and after removing the power plug from the wall,  with or without paper and with or without the toner cartridges.

The printer has been reset using the procedure seen on many YouTube videos.  Basically the printer is powered on and the lower right corner of the touch screen is held until "Permanent storage init." is displayed.

It seems like a bad formatter board but the last computer to use the printer cannot print Word or Outlook documents to a different brand of printer.  Is it possible a job is stuck in the printer?

The problem started happening this weekend which was before the firmware from October 25, 2022 was released.  I do not know what firmware is installed or if the printer did automatic firmware updates.

Is there something else to try before assuming it's a hardware issue?

Could it be something weird like low or out of toner?

Can I do a firmware update from the USB-A port under the touchscreen without using the menu?

Any help or ideas are appreciated.

Unclear from your post, have you power cycled the printer with the network cable disconnected? If the printer comes to ready with no network cable attached then likely you have a corrupt stale job somewhere on the network and need to clear the print spooler on all computers printing to this printer. If the 49 error still occurs even in stand alone mode, then it looks like you are suffering from the same issue many others are. The last firmware update was released on Thursday October 20th so it is possible you have the same issue as others posting here.

I have power cycled (by pulling the plug from the wall and the power switch) with all the cables (other than the power cable) disconnected and have the same problem.

It looks like I need to figure out how to get different firmware on the printer without using the menu since the printer does not boot to the menu.

Thank you for the reply and confirmation.  That is helpful.

You're not alone. Take a look at: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Color-LaserJet-Pro-MFP-M281...

Folks have been looking into the problem, but so far no resolution.

Thank you for the confirmation of the issue and the link to the other thread.  Even though the problem still exists knowing it's a firmware issue (caused by the automatic firmware update on October 20, 2022) and there is no resolution at this time is helpful.
