HP deskjet 2624
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am using HP deskjet 2624, and I am unable to print photos on photo paper. Everytime I try to print on photo paper, it shows E4 error. It works fine with normal paper. I am using cannon (8.5X11) inkjet matte photo paper. I'm not sure if photo paper is causing the issue. I have done all the troubleshooting steps for paper jam issue. Please help:(

The Specification (at least the document for the USA) is frustratingly short on detail.  One of the "missing" elements is the Photo paper weight limitations.

As you know, the E4 is Paper jam.

Paper jam can be "real", that is, there is a bit of paper somewhere in the printer.

Paper jam can be "fake", that is, something is wrong and the printer has no better way to tell you the problem.

The standard, known solutions are provided in the Troubleshooting document:

 E4 Error (Paper Jam)

Commentary - Everything from "here" down is complete speculation

What else could be wrong?

This is a low budget printer.  Nonetheless, it should (and indicates that it will) support printing on Photo paper.

I would guess (without any supporting evidence) that the photo paper cannot exceed a weight of 250 g/m2 (66lb).  Why?  Almost every printer for which I have found the proper information indicates the printer can handle this weight in Media type photo paper.  A few printers may be more robust, of course.

Example of Photo Paper in this category:

 HP Advanced Photo Paper

If the Canon paper is within the weight limitation (admittedly chosen almost arbitrarily, though with some thought to the process), what else could be wrong?

Because the paper is not "HP" paper, if the printer has a sensor to detect photo paper, the sensor may not "see" the Canon paper.  This does not automatically mean that you cannot use the Canon paper, but the setup may either be missing an important element or the printer may indeed be hampered by lack of the information (cannot properly "read" the paper).

The printer may lack the sophistication necessary to be accepting of non-standard paper types.

Assuming the printer can indeed use the Canon paper, you should double-check all the print dialog settings to be sure you have not missed either an acceptable "combination" (media = photo paper, Source = tray 1 (or tray), Paper Size = Letter or 8.5"X11").

Thank you for your response.

Canon photo paper is within the weight limit and all the print dialog settings are correct.  But still, the photo paper is getting stuck as soon as it enters the printer. I've to pull the paper out everytime and there will be ink streaks on the paper. I've tried selecting  "other photo inkjet paper" and  "other matte inkjet paper"  under paper type, its not working.

I am using letter size photo paper, is that an issue?. Only other option is to try with hp photo paper. But I am worried if the same issue persists, because canon paper's thickness and weight is lesser compared to hp advanced photo paper.

You are welcome.

It sounds like a problem in the printer that it cannot pick up the "photo paper" media.  After you clean the printer manually (wiping and clearing) and you run the cleaner tool twice or three times, there is little else to be done.  Consumer grade printers are not made to be serviced (fixed) in the field (away from a printer repair depot).

I wish I could tell you that the non-HP paper is the problem.  In general, we do not hear from the thousands of people that use non-HP paper everyday in HP printers.  Canon is capable of producing an excellent product - I cannot think of a reason the the brand of paper in and of itself is the issue.  The texture on that paper, the surface, may certainly have something to do with the refusal.  Some paper seems to absorb ink differently, too.  This is not my area of expertise.  HP tests many brands of paper for compatibility with their printers.  (I would guess that every manufacturer tests different brands of printer paper, that Canon does this.)

I cannot answer this concern:

But I am worried if the same issue persists, because canon paper's thickness and weight is lesser compared to hp advanced photo paper.

Anything I say is, of course, my opinion.  I cannot speak for HP except in an attempt to express what I believe to be right, correct, and useful.

If you wish to try the HP paper, at least you will know whether paper makes a difference.

If paper doesn't fix it, and cleaning doesn't fix it, then you may have to think about service or replacement.
