I replaced the printhead on my 6978 printer with the exact HP part number and the printer tells me there is a problem with the printhead but not what the problem is. I put the old one back in and it works well only in black with some red and yellow but no blue. Is there a programming problem with putting in a new head?

Hi @gthree
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 6978 is having trouble recognizing or initializing the new printhead.
While it’s great that your old printhead still partially works, the new printhead issue may point to compatibility, installation, or firmware-related problems.
Let’s try few troubleshooting steps:
1. Verify the New Printhead
Confirm that the replacement printhead matches the exact model number required for the OfficeJet 6978 (likely HP 902 or 952 printhead, depending on your region).
Ensure the printhead is new, undamaged, and genuine HP hardware. Non-HP or refurbished parts may cause recognition errors.
2. Reinstall the New Printhead
Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
Open the cartridge access door and gently remove the cartridges.
Remove the new printhead and inspect the gold contacts (on both the printhead and inside the printer). Clean the contacts gently using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Reinsert the printhead securely, ensuring it is seated properly.
Reinstall the cartridges and close the printer.
3. Update the Printer Firmware
If the new printhead isn't recognized, it may require updated firmware to function correctly.
HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.
Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

4. Perform a Hard Reset
Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for at least 60 seconds.
Reconnect the printer, turn it on, and see if the new printhead error clears.
5. Align and Clean the Printhead
If the printer starts working but the error persists intermittently:
Perform a printhead alignment from the printer menu or HP Smart app.
Use the maintenance settings to clean the printhead.
6. Reset to Factory Defaults
If the issue persists, reset the printer to factory settings:
On the control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
Reattempt the setup process with the new printhead.
