HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer

Cartridge that ran out of ink printer recognized. Alignment done with new cartridge but then keeps saying to remove and reinsert again. Will not do anything.

Tried unplugging, resetting router, all software and firmware up to date. All contacts clean.

Hi @babs58,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 4650 is having persistent issues recognizing the black cartridge, even after you’ve taken some troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the problem.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that you are using a genuine HP cartridge that is compatible with your printer model. Sometimes third-party cartridges can cause recognition issues.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove the black cartridge.
  • Inspect the cartridge and the printer's cartridge slot for any debris or damage.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly, ensuring it clicks into place, then close the access door.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • With a lint-free cloth, gently wipe the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. Avoid touching the nozzles.
  • Make sure the contacts are dry before reinserting the cartridge.

Update Printer Firmware: Even though you mentioned it's up to date, sometimes reinstalling the latest firmware can help:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check for the latest firmware for your printer model.
  • Follow the instructions to install it.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer. Turn the printer back on.

Check for Error Messages: If the printer shows any error messages during the setup process or after reinserting the cartridge, note them down. They can provide insight into the issue.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and scanning problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
