Hi @dewa2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your printer alignment is off, resulting in misaligned printouts and scans, it’s essential to perform alignment and calibration procedures. Here’s a detailed guide to correct alignment issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740:

1. Run Printer Alignment

Most printers, including the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, have a built-in alignment feature to help correct print alignment issues. Here’s how to run the alignment:

For Windows:

Open HP Printer Assistant:

  • Search: Type “HP Printer Assistant” in the Windows search bar and open it.
  • Printer Software: If you don’t have HP Printer Assistant installed, you may need to download the full-feature software from the HP Support website.

Access Printer Tools:

  • Printer Maintenance: Go to the Printer Maintenance or Tools section.

Run Alignment:

  • Align Printer: Look for an option labeled Align Printer or Print Alignment Page and follow the on-screen instructions.

Follow Instructions:

  • Print Alignment Page: The printer will print an alignment page.
  • Scan Alignment Page: Place the printed alignment page on the scanner bed as instructed and follow the steps to complete the alignment process.

For macOS:

Open HP Utility:

  • System Preferences: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select Printer: Choose your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and click Options & Supplies.
  • Utility Tab: Click on the Utility tab, then Open Printer Utility.

Run Alignment:

  • Align Printer: Look for an option to align the printer or print an alignment page and follow the instructions.

Follow Instructions:

  • Print and Scan: The printer will print an alignment page. Follow the steps to scan the page and complete the alignment.

2. Check and Adjust Paper Settings

Paper Size and Type:

  • Printer Settings: Ensure that the paper size and type settings in the printer match the actual paper loaded in the tray.
  • Load Paper Properly: Make sure the paper is loaded correctly and aligned in the tray.

Paper Guides:

  • Adjust Guides: Ensure the paper guides in the tray are adjusted to fit the paper size snugly.

3. Clean Print Heads

If alignment issues persist, cleaning the print heads might help:

Open Printer Maintenance:

  • HP Printer Assistant or HP Utility: Access the maintenance section as described above.

Run Clean Print Heads:

  • Clean Print Heads: Select the Clean Print Heads or Print Head Cleaning option and follow the instructions.

Print Test Page:

  • Test Print: After cleaning, print a test page to check if the alignment issue is resolved.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Firmware updates can fix bugs that might be causing alignment issues:

Check for Updates:

  • HP Support: Visit the HP Support website to check for any available firmware updates for your printer model.

Install Updates:

  • Follow Instructions: Download and install the latest firmware updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
