At the end of December 2024, my HP Envy 5530 Stopped printing. It was Set up on a USB cable since new years ago.. And when sending something and everything. I get the message 5530 is not the default printer, but it is the checked Default Printer. I also downloaded the 5530 as wireless and had the same results. Tried downloading without disk and with 5530 disk.
After trying absolutely everything recommended, many many times. I borrowed a used HP 5520 printer and unhooked the USB cable and 110v plug from the 5530 printer and plugged them directly into the 5520 printer and downloaded it. The 5520 printer worked and printed. So I thought the 5530 must be bad.
So I bought a new HP envy 6065e printer and installed wireless. And just like the 5530 it would not print, and I get the message it is not the default printer, But it is the checked Default Printer.
I and another person (Electrical Engineer) have literally tried everything and cannot get the 5530 to work.
If anyone has a reasonable explanation of what to do now I would appreciate it.

Hi @zenbob
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Since both your HP Envy 5530 and brand-new HP Envy 6065e have the same issue, but the HP 5520 works, the problem likely lies with your computer’s settings rather than the printers themselves. Here’s what to try:
Check Windows Default Printer Settings
Windows 10/11 has a setting that automatically changes the default printer to the last one used. This may be overriding your selection.
- Open Windows Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners
- Scroll down and turn off the option:
"Let Windows manage my default printer." - Click on your HP Envy 5530 (or 6065e) → Set as Default
Clear Print Queue & Restart Print Spooler
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter
- Find "Print Spooler", right-click, and Stop it
- Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside
- Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and Start it again
Remove & Reinstall Printer Drivers (Clean Install)
If corrupted drivers are causing the issue, you’ll need to fully remove and reinstall them.
Uninstall All HP Drivers:
- Press Win + R, type printui /s /t2, and hit Enter
- Select HP Envy 5530/6065e and Remove Device
- Check "Remove driver and driver package" and confirm
Delete Registry Keys (Advanced)
- Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter
- Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers - Delete the HP printer entries

Restart PC & Install Fresh Drivers:
- Download the latest drivers from HP Support
- Install the drivers before connecting the printer
Check for Windows Printer Restrictions (GPO/Policy Issue)
Since even a brand-new printer had the same issue, your Windows profile settings or policies might be blocking printing.
- Open Registry Editor (regedit)
- Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows - Look for "Device" on the right
- If it shows a different default printer, change it to "HP Envy 5530, winspool, Ne00:"
- Restart your computer
Try Printing from Another User Account
If nothing works, create a new user profile on Windows and see if the issue persists. If the new profile can print, the problem is with your current Windows account settings.
Test on Another Computer
If possible, connect your HP Envy 5530 to a different computer (or a smartphone via HP Smart app). If it prints fine there, the issue is definitely within your Windows settings.
If you still can’t print, let me know what happens after these steps! 😊
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
