HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I keep getting printer failure code 0x6100004a. I have tried restarting multiple times and checked all components. My ink is very low, but it won't even let me change them to see if that's the issue.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The 0x6100004a "Printer Failure" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer usually indicates a hardware or internal ink system issue. Here's a structured way to troubleshoot and possibly resolve it:

Power Reset (Hard Reset)

A basic restart isn't always enough. Try this deeper reset:

  1. Turn ON the printer (if it’s not already on).
  2. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer (while still powered on).
  3. Unplug it from the wall outlet (this is important to clear any residual power).
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall directly (no surge protector).
  6. Reconnect the cable to the printer and turn it on.

Check for Obstructions or Cartridge Misalignment

Even if there's no visible jam:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • See if the ink carriage (ink bar) is stuck or jammed to one side.
  • DO NOT force it, but gently nudge it if it feels stuck.
  • Shine a flashlight inside the printer to look for small bits of plastic, paper, or packaging.
  • Ensure cartridges are firmly seated with no protective tape left on contacts or nozzles.

Clean the Cartridge and Carriage Contacts

Dust or dried ink on the electrical contacts can trigger system errors:

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the cartridge door.
  3. Remove the cartridges if possible.
  4. Use a lint-free cloth (or cotton swab) slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  5. Gently wipe:
The copper-colored contacts on the cartridges.
The matching contacts inside the carriage (where the cartridge fits).
  6. Let everything dry (2–3 minutes), reinstall, then power on.

Update Firmware via USB

If the printer connects via USB to a PC and is recognized, you may be able to apply a firmware update:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
