Hi @angk1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m sorry you’re facing this error on your OfficeJet Pro 6978, especially since it was working perfectly until today. Thank you for already checking for paper jams—that’s an important first step.

Let’s walk through a few actions that can help clear the 0x610004a error and bring the printer back to life:

Power reset

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds to allow the printer’s internal power to discharge.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet directly (avoid surge protectors).
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

Check carriage movement

  • Open the ink access door and gently move the carriage left and right by hand. It should slide smoothly.
  • If there is any resistance, remove the ink cartridges and re-seat them carefully.
  • Close the door and try powering on again.

Remove and reseat ink cartridges

  • Take out all cartridges, inspect them for any debris or ink buildup, and wipe contacts gently with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert them firmly until they click into place.

Clean paper path and rollers

  • Even if no jam is visible, dust or small fragments can trigger errors.
  • Use a clean, lightly dampened lint-free cloth to wipe the rollers accessible from the input tray and rear access.

Update printer firmware

  • On your Windows PC, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > Printer Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure the printer has the latest fixes.

After performing these steps, restart the printer and check if the error clears. If the issue persists, repeat the power reset once more with cartridges removed, then reinsert them after the restart.
