Microsoft Windows 11

had a printer failure message yesterday after inserting  new magenta cartridge into printer. Then a message that the cartridge was a used cartridge.

Bought a new magenta cartridge, inserted it and new cyan and yellow and Still get the same message.   The ink cartridges are new so - don't know what to do next.

Hi @Carstal,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to encounter those messages after inserting new cartridges. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 1-2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again. This can sometimes reset the printer's internal memory and clear error messages.
  • Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that each cartridge is securely installed in its correct slot. Sometimes, cartridges may not be fully clicked into place, causing the printer to not recognize them.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and carefully remove the new cartridges. Check the contacts (gold-colored dots) on the cartridges and inside the printer for any dirt or debris. Gently clean them with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water if necessary.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve cartridge recognition issues. Visit the HP support website for your printer model, locate the firmware section, and follow the instructions to update it if available.
  • Reset the Printer: If the above steps don't work, try resetting the printer to its factory defaults. This can typically be done through the printer's menu settings or by holding down specific buttons as per your printer's manual.

By going through these steps, you should hopefully be able to resolve the cartridge recognition issue and get your printer working with the new cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
