How do you know which ink cartridge needs replacing or do they both have to be replaced at the same time?

Hello @Paul1046, Greetings!
Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a dynamite location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.
I see that you are trying to understand when to replace the cartridges. I would be glad to be of your assistance.
You do not need to replace both the cartridges at the same time. You can check the ink level and replace the cartridge which is low on ink. The easiest way to check the ink level on your printer is to touch the “ink” icon on your printer screen. That will display the ink levels.
Check http://hp.care/2enymuY to get more detailed instructions.
PS: Your printer has a built in software which will notify you when the ink level goes down. 🙂
Let me know if that helps or if you need further assistance.
Cheers 🙂
