Hi @nv1962
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your printer might be in fax mode or there’s a setting that’s causing it to expect a fax number before proceeding with a print job. This is usually an issue with multifunction printers that handle both printing and faxing, such as your HP printer. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:
1. Check the Printer Mode
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the phone line (if connected to a fax line).
- After turning it back on, try printing again. Sometimes, if the printer is connected to a fax line, it may default to fax mode and ask for a recipient’s fax number.
2. Check Printer Settings
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the fax settings (if applicable) and make sure the printer is set to Print mode or Copy/Print mode instead of Fax mode.
- You may also have a Fax Setup Wizard in the menu where you can verify if the printer is incorrectly trying to send a fax.
3. Disable Fax Feature Temporarily
- If your printer has a fax feature and it is not needed, you can temporarily disable the fax function in the settings.
- Go to the printer menu, then to Fax settings or Preferences.
- Disable Fax mode or ensure that the printer is set to the Print or Copy mode instead of Fax.
4. Check for Default Settings in the Print Dialog
- When you go to print your invoice, make sure you’re not selecting a Fax option in the print dialog box.
- In Windows, click on File > Print, and check the printer name and make sure it's the correct printer (and not a fax option).
- Make sure your printer is selected, not a Fax device, in the list of available printers.
5. Check for Software Configuration Issues
- If you’re printing from a specific program (like an invoicing or PDF software), check the printer settings in that program.
- It’s possible that a fax driver or a fax configuration within the software is overriding the print function. If needed, select the correct printer in the software’s print settings.
6. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Sometimes, outdated or misconfigured printer drivers can cause issues. Uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers from the HP website.
- After reinstalling, make sure the correct driver is installed for printing and not for faxing.
7. Reset the Printer
- Resetting the printer settings to default might help clear any incorrect configurations that are causing the fax number request.
- To reset, go to the Settings menu on the printer and look for a Restore Defaults or Reset option.
I hope this helps.

Hey I had the same problem, and I think it was because it was printing from the internet and required extra effort.
My dad checked if the right printer was connected- by first asking to print a test page and then selecting the printer with the name of the it first for example HP printer because for some reason another or the same printer came up but was connected to a comcast email first.
Then I selected print using not the buttons in the app (mine was through amazon) but by right clicking and printing from that drop down. Hope this helps somebody else
