Hi @ljb56

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

If your HP OfficeJet 5255 is only printing blank pages or small portions of the print job and showing a "failed owner" message, there are several potential causes. Here’s a troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the issue:

1. Check Ink Cartridges

  • Non-Official Cartridge: Non-genuine cartridges can sometimes cause printing issues. Try replacing the non-HP cartridge with an official HP cartridge to see if that resolves the problem.
  • Ink Levels: Check the ink levels for all cartridges. If any cartridge is low or empty, it could affect printing.

2. Print Head Cleaning

  • Run a Cleaning Cycle: Use the printer's built-in cleaning function to clear any clogs. You can typically find this option in the printer's menu or via the HP Smart app.
  • Manual Cleaning: If necessary, you can manually clean the printhead. Remove the cartridges and gently clean the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water.

3. Check Print Settings

  • Paper Size and Type: Ensure that the paper size and type settings on your MacBook match the paper loaded in the printer.
  • Print Quality Settings: Check that the print quality settings are not set too low.

4. Update Drivers

  • HP Smart App: Make sure you have the latest drivers installed. You can use the HP Smart app or visit the HP website to download the latest drivers for your printer.

5. Clear Print Queue

  • Sometimes, a stalled print job can cause issues. Clear the print queue on your MacBook:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click on Printers & Scanners.
    3. Select your printer and click Open Print Queue.
    4. Delete any stuck jobs.

6. Restart Devices

  • Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart MacBook: Restart your MacBook to refresh the connection.

7. Re-add Printer

  • Try removing the printer from your MacBook and then adding it again:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select the printer and click the - button to remove it.
    3. Then click the + button to add it back.

8. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • If you have access to a Windows PC, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. It can help diagnose and fix common printing issues.
