Hi @CharityTaylor,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the details! If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw shows as offline when a document is in the queue, but comes back online when paused, it’s likely a communication or driver issue between your Mac (macOS Monterey) and the printer. Here’s how to fix it:

1. Reset the Printing System

This clears out any corrupted settings:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control + Click) in the printer list.
  • Select Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add your printer using the “+” button.

2. Use AirPrint Instead of HP Driver

HP drivers can sometimes conflict with macOS:

  • When re-adding the printer, select “AirPrint” from the “Use” dropdown instead of the HP driver.
  • This uses Apple’s built-in driver, which is often more stable.

3. Assign a Static IP Address

Dynamic IPs can cause the printer to go offline:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Network Settings > Wireless > Network Summary.
  • Note the IP address and enter it in your browser to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Go to Network > IPv4 Settings and set a Manual IP (e.g., 192.168.1.250).
  • Save and restart the printer.

4. Update Firmware

5. Check for macOS Updates

  • Go to System Preferences > Software Update.
  • Install any available updates for macOS Monterey.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
