Hi @leakst,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue with the print spooler service on your HP Office Jet Pro 8720 printer. This is a common problem that can usually be resolved by restarting the print spooler service on your computer.
Here’s how you can do it.
For Windows:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services window.
- In the Services window, scroll down and locate Print Spooler in the list.
- Right-click on Print Spooler and choose Restart. If it’s not running, you can choose Start instead.
- Once restarted, close the Services window.
After restarting the Print Spooler service, try printing again to see if the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists:
If restarting the Print Spooler service doesn't resolve the issue, you can try these additional steps:
Clear the Print Queue:
- Go back to the Services window (services.msc).
- Stop the Print Spooler service.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS (you may need administrator rights to access this folder).
- Delete all files in the PRINTERS folder.
- Restart the Print Spooler service from the Services window.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Sometimes outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause print spooler issues.
- Visit the HP support website and download the latest drivers for your HP Office Jet Pro 8720 printer.
- Install the drivers and restart your computer.

Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your operating system is up to date with the latest Windows updates as these can sometimes include fixes for printer-related issues.
For macOS:
Restart Print Spooler:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer from the list and click the - button to remove it.
- Click Add (+) to re-add the printer.
- Try printing again.
Reset Printing System (if needed):
- Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) on the list of printers on the left sidebar.
- Choose Reset printing system and confirm the action.
- Re-add your printer and try printing again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
