Hi @Karen1102

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP Smart Tank 7301 continues to show a printhead error even after installing new printheads and performing a reset, the issue may stem from internal sensor misreads, firmware corruption, or improper initialization.

Let’s walk through a deeper recovery sequence to help clear the error.

Step-by-Step: Resolve Persistent Printhead Error on HP Smart Tank 7301

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 2 full minutes.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on the printer and observe the display.

This clears residual charge and resets the printhead detection logic.

2. Reinstall Both Printheads Carefully

  • Open the printhead access door.
  • Remove both the black and tri-color printheads.
  • Gently wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let them dry for 5 minutes.
  • Reinsert both printheads firmly until they click into place.
  • Close the door and wait for initialization.

Even new printheads can trigger errors if not fully seated or if contacts are slightly misaligned.

3. Update Firmware via HP App

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Select your printer > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • Navigate to Tools > Printer Updates and install any available firmware.

Or download directly from:  HP Smart Tank 7301 Firmware and Drivers

Firmware updates often resolve persistent printhead detection errors.

4. Run Printhead Cleaning (If Accessible)

  • In the HP App, go to Settings > Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • If the option is available, run the cleaning cycle once.

This can help reinitialize ink flow and clear internal flags.

If the error persists after these steps, the issue may involve the printhead carriage sensor or internal logic board.

Let me know how the printer responds after reseating and firmware update—I can guide you through checking sensor alignment or preparing a USB recovery if needed.
