My HPOOfficeJetPro 8600 has an error code "There is a problem with the printer or ink system." I have tried turning it off. Say to contact HP helpdesk.

It has worked fine in the past and has new ink.

Hi @Jolenemama14 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer usually indicates an issue with the ink cartridges or the printhead.

Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

1. Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error message persists.

2. Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Open the ink cartridge access door and make sure all cartridges are correctly installed and securely in place.
  • Remove each cartridge and inspect it for any visible damage or leaks.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and ensure they click into place properly.

3. Clean the Printhead

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead. This will run an automatic cleaning process which can sometimes resolve ink system issues.
  • If the automatic cleaning doesn’t work, you might need to manually clean the printhead:
    • Open the printer cover and remove the printhead.
    • Gently clean the copper contacts on the printhead with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
    • Allow it to dry for about 10 minutes, then reinstall the printhead.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a hard reset by turning the printer on, and then disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer while it is still on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the printer and wall outlet.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the issue is resolved.

5. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check for firmware updates by visiting the HP Support website and searching for your printer model.
  • Download and install any available firmware updates.

6. Check for Obstructions

  • Check the inside of the printer for any paper jams or obstructions that could be causing the error.

7. Replace the Printhead

  • If none of the above steps work, there may be a problem with the printhead itself. You might need to replace it. HP support can provide guidance on purchasing a new printhead.
