My HP Envy 5640 has suddenly decided to stop printing photos from m y Ipad, because the printer (and HP Smart App) says it is out of paper, even though it is not. I can print documents no problem, and I can print documents and photos from my Asus PC no problem. I have disconncted the printer and reconnected it, uninstalled and reinstalled the App, but to no avail. The photo paper has been loaded properly (it has printed hundreds of photos before without any issue), but as soon as I send an instruction, the printer makes a funny sound, as if it is searching for the paper, and then displays the error message. Software is all up to date. Any ideas.

@geiss1949, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I see that you have issues with printing photos from your iPad, this could be an issue with the HP Smart App or the settings. Let us try to isolate and resolve the issue-
Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Ensure your iOS device is up to date. Refer to the document Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch for help.
Now, try printing using the AirPrint feature instead of the HP Smart App. Here is how you do it-
-
Make sure the printer is turned on, ink cartridges are installed, and plain paper is loaded in the main tray.
-
Open the item you want to print, and then tap the Share icon
or
.
-
Tap Print or the Print icon
to open Printer Options.
-
Tap Select Printer to select your printer.
-
Change any of the following print job settings. Available settings vary depending on the app you are printing from, the print job type, and your printer.
-
Paper: Make any paper size changes on the printer. AirPrint automatically detects the paper size loaded in the printer or the size selected on the printer control panel. If the detected size is different than the paper in the tray, an error might display asking to confirm the size.
-
Number of copies: Select how many copies you want to print.
-
Black & White: Select to print in grayscale. This option only displays for color printers.
-
Double-sided printing: Print on both sides of the paper for certain file types.
-
Page range: Select specific pages within a document or webpage to print.
-
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for that advice. All firmware and iPad software was up to date, and before I read this post, I had decided to try to print a photo with AirPrint, rather than the HP App, and, hey presto, it worked. it still doesn’t explain why the App no longer works with photos on either my IPad or ASUS PC, yet works with documents.
