I used to be able to specify 0.3” for both the left and right margins and the document would print perfectly. Now whether I specify the left and right margins to be 0.3” or 0.5” or 1.0”, the printed document is shifted to the right an additional 0.65 inch and the words are cut off mid-letter about 0.7” from the right side of the paper.

Refer to page 109 of the user guide for instructions on setting paper tray alignment.

This is your first step to troubleshooting an alignment issue.

The Repairatrooper reply was helpful, but the range of correction was not sufficient to solve the problem. The X1 shift range was limited to +/- 20 units of 0.25 mm. When I set it to 20 units the text shifted 5 mm to the right from where it was and when I set it to -20 the text shifted left by 5 mm from where it was. The problem is that the text was shifted to the right by about 16.4 mm more than it should have been, so setting X1 shift to -20 corrected less than a third of the problem.

Check and make sure that the paper guides in the tray are in the correct location. I have seen cases where they get out of whack as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I took the paper tray out and looked it over in detail. It looks fine and there is no way to mechanically shift the paper to the right. I think something has gone wrong with the printer internal software. I have an HP computer with a Microsoft 365 subscription. When I’m working on a Word document and hit Print, it used to print immediately. Now it does not. The display on the printer just cycles between two messages:

            Load tray 1.

            Plain, Letter

and

            Or press [OK] to use

                available media.

When I press OK the document prints.
