Hi @mac226,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand issues with the supply system on an HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 could indicate a problem related to ink cartridges, the printhead, or internal mechanisms managing the ink flow. Here are some steps to identify and resolve the issue:
1. Understand the Problem
- Is there an error message on the printer (e.g., “Cartridge problem,” “Supply system error,” or similar)?
- Are prints blank, streaked, or uneven?
- Is there any visible damage or leaking ink in the cartridge area?
2. Check the Ink Cartridges
- Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Ensure that you are using authentic HP 952, 952XL, 956XL, or compatible ink cartridges.
- Inspect Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and check for:
- Damage to the plastic body or nozzles.
- Expired cartridges (check the expiration date on the label).
- Clean the Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and printer.
- Reinstall the Cartridges: Properly reseat them in the printer.
3. Run a Diagnostic Test
- From the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Print Quality Tools.
- Run the Clean Printhead or Align Printhead tools.
- Print a test page to evaluate print quality.
4. Inspect the Printhead
- Clogs: If print quality issues persist, the printhead may be clogged. Use the printer's cleaning tools multiple times.
- Manual Cleaning: If automated tools don’t resolve the issue, clean the printhead manually using distilled water and a lint-free cloth.
- Reseat or Replace the Printhead:
- Open the printhead latch and remove the printhead.
- Reseat it firmly or replace it if damaged.
5. Perform a Printer Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Check if the issue persists.
6. Update FirmwareUpdate the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure the printer firmware is up to date. You can update it via the HP Smart app or from the printer’s control panel.
7. Check for Internal Issues
- Look for any ink leaks or blockages inside the printer.
- Clean the area where the cartridges and printhead sit.
