I work in a hospital as IT, and one of the big printers is having a weird issue. I couldn't find any solutions online. As the title says, the printer is saying that tray 1 needs paper. There are 3 trays, tray 2 is set to letter and tray 3 is set to labels. Tray one was set to "Any Size" "Any Type."
However, tray 1 only fits the toner and the tray does not have any way to slide out to insert paper, believe me, I tried for a long time. It has 3 trays and is very large which I think makes it different it from the 2-tray e52645 printers with the multipurpose trays that are mentioned in the e52645 user manual.
I tried rebooting and it didn't resolve anything. As a temporary fix, I changed the tray settings to a size and type that is not used, so the printer doesn't try to print from tray 1. That is working for now, but I'd rather have a permanent solution than a workaround.
Info: the printer is connected to many computers wirelessly.
Is there a real fix?

Just to clarify for you. All E52645 units are identical save the number of extra trays they have. Tray numbering is the same for ALL HP printers. The MP or bypass tray is Tray 1. The standard drawer is tray 2 and any additional added trays are 3,4,5. 5 being the lowest tray. The MP tray is part of the front door, rather than opening the toner door you pull down the front panel. Setting a tray to any size, any type can have negative effects on other operations and sometimes result in printer always asking for paper in the MP tray rather than one of the other trays.
If the tray does not open then it is either broken or jammed and you may need to have a service tech check it.

Hi @JM237,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're encountering with the HP LaserJet MFP E52645 sounds like a configuration or firmware glitch, especially since tray 1 is typically a multipurpose tray but in your case, it's being recognized incorrectly. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve this.
Firmware Update
Ensure the printer's firmware is up to date. HP regularly releases firmware updates that fix bugs and improve printer functionality. You can check for the latest firmware on the HP support website:
- Visit the HP Support page.
- Enter the model number (HP LaserJet MFP E52645).
- Download and install the latest firmware.
Reset Printer Settings
Resetting the printer to its factory default settings can sometimes resolve issues caused by incorrect configurations:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Settings.
- Navigate to General or Printer Maintenance.
- Select Restore Factory Defaults.
Tray Configuration
Check and reconfigure the tray settings to ensure they are correctly set:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Settings.
- Navigate to Tray and Paper Management.
- Confirm that Tray 1 is set to "Any Size" and "Any Type" or disable Tray 1 if possible, given your unique tray configuration.
Driver Update
Ensure the printer drivers on the connected computers are up to date:
- Go to the HP Support page and download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet MFP E52645.
- Install the drivers on all computers connected to the printer.
Check Printer Configuration in Print Server
If the printer is connected via a print server, verify the configuration settings there:
- Access the print server management interface.
- Ensure that the tray settings are correctly configured.
- Sometimes print servers can override local printer settings.
Printer Logs and Error Messages
Check the printer logs and error messages for more details:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Reports or Diagnostics.
- Print out the error logs to see if there are more specific error codes or messages that can help in troubleshooting.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Oh my gosh, you're right. I didn't realize you could open it like that. I tested printing from there and it worked. Thanks! Am I correct in assuming that you can only print from the MP tray when it's open and loaded with paper? You can't put paper in and then close it?

We usually advise clients that it is a convenience tray, as yes tray must remain open when media is loaded. Sadly, we have seen a few clients that ignore this advice and wind up damaging the tray when someone bumps into it.
Glad to hear that the issue is resolved.
