Is there any fix once I get the message that "the scanner has become damaged and cannot copy or scan". This happened right in the middle of a typical scan for me so I don't understand how it could be a hardware problem.

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting scanner damaged error message.
I am eager to assist you.
Are you getting this message on printer display or Mac.
Are you trying to scan from printer or from any application on Mac?
Meanwhile, open the scanner lid, initiate scanning and check if the scanner light is lit up and moving across the scanner glass?
Perform a power reset
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector and printer.
Reply with the result of the above-mentioned steps, for further assistance.
To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others and please give the same post a Kudos.
Cheers.
