HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 error code "supply system incompatible" I originally had a non HP cartridge in, but after this error I replaced all cartridges with HP approved product cartridges. I did this 3 times at a great cost, but still get the same error code. I turn printer power off, unplug it, rebooted my computer but still this error. I've run through the online trouble shooting, the HP online assistant, but they were no help. What else can I do?

Hi @jimhouck,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Double-check that the cartridges are the correct model for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740. Sometimes, similar models might cause confusion.

Check for Protective Coverings:

  • Ensure that all protective tape and coverings have been completely removed from the cartridges.

Firmware Update:

  • Update your printer’s firmware to the latest version. Sometimes, recent updates may fix compatibility or error issues related to cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Soft Reset: Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord, and wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting and turning it back on.
  • Hard Reset: Reset to factory settings through the printer's menu, but note this will clear all current settings.

Inspect and Clean Contacts:

  • Carefully remove the cartridges and clean both the cartridges and the interior contacts of the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Make sure everything is dry before reinserting the cartridges.

Power Reset:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while the printer is on. Unplug the power cord from the power source. Wait for one minute, then plug it back in.

I hope this helps.
