My printer screen says HP Instant ink Problem, but the ink in the printer is the same one that printed before,

OfficeJet Pro 6978

All the inks are 902

This makes no sense, what should I do?

Hi @Richard8855,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "HP Instant Ink Problem" message can occur for various reasons, even if the ink cartridges were previously working. Here are some steps to resolve the issue on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978.

Check Instant Ink Subscription Status

  • Log in to your HP Instant Ink account and check if your subscription is still active. If there are any billing issues or the subscription was canceled, the printer may stop accepting the Instant Ink cartridges.

Reinstall Instant Ink Cartridges

  • Remove each of the 902 cartridges from the printer.
  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
  • Reinsert the cartridges after the printer restarts.

Check Internet Connection

  • Your printer needs to be connected to the internet to communicate with the HP Instant Ink service. Verify that your printer is connected to WiFi and can access the internet.
  • Try restarting your router and printer.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Outdated printer firmware can sometimes cause issues with recognizing Instant Ink cartridges.
  • Go to HP Support and download the latest firmware for your OfficeJet Pro 6978.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • Unplug the printer while it's powered on.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset internal memory and clear errors.

Check for Cartridge Enrollment

  • Make sure that the cartridges installed are part of the Instant Ink program and that they are not mixed with standard retail cartridges. Mixing Instant Ink and regular cartridges can cause issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
