I have a  HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a.

My printer out of nowhere started showing  an error message that says "printer failure: there is a problem with the printer or ink system. turn printer off, then on. if problem persist contact HP." I shut it down, unplugged it, removed all the ink and reinserted the ink and it still kept popping up the same message. So now i am contacting HP, what do i do to fix this?

Hi @SubhyaAL,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "Printer Failure" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 (N911a) often points to issues with the printer's hardware, ink system, or printhead. Here are the troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer.

2. Check the Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove each cartridge and inspect for damage, leaks, or improper installation.
  3. Wipe the contacts on the cartridges gently with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
  4. Reinsert the cartridges and ensure they click securely into place.

3. Clean the Printhead

  1. With the printer on, open the cartridge access door.
  2. Wait until the printhead stops moving, then unplug the printer.
  3. Remove all cartridges from the printhead.
  4. Lift the latch securing the printhead and gently remove it.
  5. Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth moistened with distilled water.
  6. Allow the components to dry completely.
  7. Reinsert the printhead, secure the latch, and reinstall the cartridges.
  8. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

4. Reset the Printer

Perform a semi-full reset:

  1. With the printer on, disconnect the power cord.
  2. Press and hold the # and 6 keys on the printer's keypad.
  3. While holding the keys, reconnect the power cord.
  4. Release the keys when the printer turns on and displays a reset message.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer.

5. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

If the printer powers on:

  1. Download and install the latest firmware for your printer from the HP Support website.
  2. Follow the installation instructions to update the printer's firmware.

6. Replace the Printhead

If the error persists, the printhead might be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
