Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I keep getting error message that "HP System Tray Status has stopped working" and asks if I wish to check online for a solution. When I ignore that and close the dialogue box, I get "HPCP1020sm EXE (64bit) has stopped working" and do I wish to check online for a solution. The printer has, up until recently, worked just fine.  Current problem has nothing to do with the System Tray, I'm sure. However, what the heck IS the System Tray and why should I care if it has stopped working?
