I have left over 950Xl and 951XL cartridges worth quite a bit that I cannot use now my HP Officejet 8600 plus does not want to print. Are there any printers available today that use these type of ink cartridges?

The following are the most recent Officejet Pro models that used the HP 950XL and HP 951XL cartridges:

OFFICEJET PRO

Unfortunately, the above models (and the previous Officejeet Pro 8600 series models) have all been discontinued. You may be able to find the printers on the used market.

What exactly are the issues you are having with your Officejet Pro 8600 Plus?  Please describe the symptoms and any error messages you are seeing.  The printheads and some other replacement parts in the Officejet Pro 8600 series printers are still available.

Hi,

The issues we have with the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus appears to be that it is not recognising genuine print cartridges. The error message that comes up is -

One or more cartridges appear to be damaged

Remove and replace with new cartridges

We have replaced the cartridge that was not recognised, then the printer is happy with that one and then gives the same message and a another cartridge (or two) that it is now not recognising. So- we have bought all new ink cartridges for the printer and at one stage or another, the printer recognises them all, at different stages, not all together (which is very frustrating)

The printer, as it goes through the recognition process of the cartridges, does make a ‘whurring’ noise also.

If you can help , that would be amazing!!

I just want to let you know I have not forgotten this.  I took a bunch of pictures and am writing up a detailed description of how to clean the electrical contacts, but it is getting late, and looks like I will not finish until tomorrow.

The whirring sound you hear is the cleaning cycle for the printhead.  It is normal for this to be done when cartridges are replaced or at other times.

OK, at this point I would suggest cleaning the electrical contacts in the printer and on the cartridges.  To do the cleaning you will need a large flat area (a card table would be about the right size).  Cover with a few layers of newspaper to keep from leaving stains on the table.  You will need the following supplies:

flashlight

q-tips printhead pins)

box of tissues

bowl half full of water

empty bowl

paper towels

long wooden toothpics (if needed to straignten printhead pins).

You are going to remove the cartridges, then remove the printhead from the printer and clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the printer, then replace the printhead in the printer, then replace the cartridges and run an alignment.  Please read through the procedure thoroughly before starting.  If you need any clarification please ask before starting.  Once you remove the printhead you will want to get the steps done and the printhead back in the printer in fifteen minutes or less.

Here is the detailed procedure:

  1. Get the workplace prepared.  You will need the printer and a clear area in front of it, with the supplies listed above within reach.  Dampen a few tissues and squeeze out the excess water. Put the damp tissues in the empty bowl for later.  Similarly, dampen one end of a few Q-tips, squeeze out the excess water and put them aside.
  2. Turn on the printer and open the front panel as if you were changing the cartridges.  Remove the cartridges.  As you remove them turn them so you can see the four gold pads in the upper left rear of the cartridge as it is removed from the printer.  Wipe the gold pads with a damp tisssue then set the cartridge aside.   Repeat for the other cartridges.                                                                  Cartridge.jpg
  3. Use a flashlight to look into the printhead in the printer.  Near the right rear of the printhead assembly there is a latch.  Lift the latch up so that it is pointing straight out the front and then gently remove the printhead by lifting it slightly and then pulling it straight out the front of the printer.  For the following steps you will need to hold the printhead assembly with your left hand (assuming you are right-handed), with your thumb on the right side near the top and fingers on the left side.  Do not put down the printhead until instructed to do so.
  4. Turn over the printhead and look at the areas with the nozzles.         Bob_Headrick_1-1707376146179.jpeg
  5. If this area is covered with wet ink it may be best to gently wipe the area with a damp tissues to avoid color mixing in the printhead and/or dripping on the table or carpet.  Discard the tissue(s) used for wiping the printhead.
  6. Turn the printhead assembly over so the nozzles are once again pointing downward and then look at the back side.                                                                Bob_Headrick_2-1707376146476.jpeg
  7. There are a series of gold rectangular contacts.  Gently wipe then with a damp q-tip.  Make sure to remove any dust (or pet hair) that may be present on the electrical contacts. Put a few layers of paper towels on the work surface and place the printhead assembly with the electrical contacts you just cleaned facing downward on the paper towels. Next, turn the printhead assembly so you can look in the area where the cartridges would be installed.Bob_Headrick_3-1707376146669.jpeg
  8. Use a flashlight and look at the four sets of gold pins that mate with the gold pads on the cartridges that we previously cleaned.  The four sets of gold pins should look the same.  Compare them, looking for any that are bent or displaced. If there are any bent or displaced pins gently nudge them back into position with a long wooden toothpick.  Be gentle!
  9. Reinstall the printhead assembly into the printer.  You may need to put the printhead in slightly higher and allow it to lower into position.  Gently wiggle the printhead from side to side if necessary to get it to properly seat.  Once the printhead is seated lower the latch lever on the right side.  (At this point it will be horizontal at the top, you will need to lower it to the vertical position.)
  10. Reinstall each cartridge, then close the access door.  At this point, the printer should initialize the cartridges and then print an alignment page.  If the alignment succeeds you are good to go.  If the alignment fails I would suggest the following:  from the front panel click on Setup, Tools, Clean Printhead.  The printer will go through a cleaning cycle and then print a test page.  Examine the page for missing areas of print or other defects.  If necessary do a second or third cleaning cycle.

The above should resolve your issues with cartridges being rejected.  Please let me know how things go.
