Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

What printer is replacement for hp envy 5540 which was working fine till a few days ago. Then decided to print only in black/white.

HP support insisted that I now have a 2nd copy of the printer which has different drivers and I must retain to original for scanning. I think it is due to the latest  version of HP Printer Assistant that it insisted I had for a new Win10 PC butHP will not admit it other than to say the drivers sometimes do not install properly.

Easiest answer is to buy a new printer but I need one like the 5540 to print, scan and print photos with a paper tray etc

@Brixhamboy, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Are you able to copy in color?

Before I provide you with the equivalent printer details, let us try some additional troubleshooting steps. Here is what you can do:

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.

For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

Also, I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Download and install the full-featured software from here.

If the issue persists, uninstall the printer using the steps above. And then reinstall the printer using Windows Built-in drivers.

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Refer to this document HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver for help.

I will try these steps for uninstalling and reinstalling when I get time. I have to ask why did the HP support desk not do this instead of their rather botched effort of 2 versions on the printer. Yes I can copy in colour. I would still be grateful for details of replacement model. I see that Envy 6230 seems similar but also Envy 6234 which is only sold by PC world. Are they the same but in a different case?

@Brixhamboy

Both Envy 6230 and 6234 are the same, no differences between the two.

You can also check HP ENVY Photo 7800 All-in-One Series and HP ENVY Photo 6200 All-in-One Printer series.
