HP ENVY 6022e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

why does my hp envy 6022 keeps going offline.

It runs for several days then goes offline YET AGAIN

IIII know I can turn it off, on, suffer the lightshow and music & it's working again for a few days, but that isn't a solution. Why can't HP offer a firmware upgrade to stop this happening instead.

Mind you, as every time I login to this support site I'm told my credentials are wrong and I have to reset the password so in reality if they can't maintain the user database, what hope for a printer fix?

It is going to sleep and when it wakes up it's either getting a different IP address or it's connecting to a different Wi-Fi band or both.

Possibly you can tell it not to sleep.

The printer is waking up from sleep and getting a different IP address than it had and your PC cannot communicate with it anymore. A quick fix is to set the sleep to off or never.
Access the printers embedded web page and set sleep to off or never.

If you cannot keep the printer from sleeping then make the printer use only one band.

Log into the modem/router and change the name (SSID) of one of the bands.  Have the printer connect only to that band. The 2.4ghz is probably the best.

If the printer keeps changing its IP address with the same Wi-Fi band,  then a change to the modem is necessary. The printer needs to be assigned a fixed IP address that is reserved and does not change. This is necessary on flex networks (multiple Wi-Fi booster / repeaters)

Assigning a fixed or reserved IP address is done in the modem as part of DHCP configuration.

First get a network report from the printer so you know its IP address or Mac address
Log into the modem and look for the DHCP server. Find the IP or Mac address of the printer and make it a fixed IP address.

The above is complicated.  To avoid using the router/ modem you can print directly to the printer using Wi-Fi direct.
reset the printer

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the printer back in.
  3. Hold the Resume button for over 10 seconds until the lights start to flas

Wi-Fi Direct can be used to avoid configuring the router. Watch this video: 64xx
Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 28 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router.

it HAD had a static IP address, although after switch off/on it reverted to DHCP, fortunately my router allocated the previous static address back as DHCP request. I have now set to MANUAL again but don't hold out any hope that will remain.

I checked to router logs, back to the previous sleep +1 on neither of those occasions did the ip address change from current vale (also held in LMHOST table)

I previously used several Canons and NEVER had these problems, and regret switching to HP now (it appeared on paper to be a better printer/scanner, but now.. not really)

The setting for static is in the router or modem.   If you set the printer manually to use a fixed IP address that address may not be available if the router assigned it to a different device.  It depends on if the printer powers up first.

I have a number of wildlife cams in my greenbelt, and when i first set them up I discovered the IP addresses were changing after a power outage.  The cameras were being assigned addresses that had been used by the several PCs and printers.  The cameras powered up immediately but the PCs had buttons to turn on and they were the last to power up.

I also found that my smartphone would sometimes be assigned the 2.4ghz band instead of the 5ghz and I had to assign a different name for the 5ghz band to ensure my phone was on it.

I am happy with my older LJ printer. It does not check to see if I have a genuine HP toner unlike the ink cartridge printers.  HP is not the only OEM that does this.

Gosh, after some 35 years in IT network management  I didn't know that.

Of course I always set output devices, printers, scanners to static AND set router to not allocate that address, although most modern routers learn static devices and do use those IPs for DHCP.

It's an issue with the printer, it just goes to sleep, you can ping it but it ONLY wakes up when you power cycle it

I've worked through the event log on the router, and can confirm that even  while printer was in DHCP mode, the ONLY address it ever got offered was the same as the Static I had originally set.

I also checked if that IP was ever  offered to any other device and can confirm that it never was offered elsewhere.

SO it's back to the printer just going off-line when it suits it which was my initial question

WHY?

HP Recommended

There are a number of things that can cause  this including design flaws.

Did you try disabling sleep?

Try selecting a better channel
Be sure to find the channel that has the least amount of noise
