Hello, @Steptoeing60
Thanks for the update! Glad to know that you were able to use the printer by connecting using the Wi-Fi direct 🙂
Now, to answer your question, Wi-Fi direct operates differently to than that of a local wireless network. Wi-Fi Direct provides a direct wireless connection to your HP printer that allows you to print without joining a local network or connecting to the Internet. Think of it as an extended version of the Bluetooth technology.
Wi-Fi direct is very useful when you do not have a home network and still, like to print wireless. But since you have the home network, I would advise you connect the printer to the home network. Once you do that, you can print from your mobile devices as well as Chromebook without using the Wi-Fi direct. You can use the WPS option to connect your printer to the home network.
Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until the Wireless light blinks, and then press the WPS button on your router. Wait for the wireless light to stop blinking and remain solid. If you do not have WPS option on your router, then you might need to use a MAC or Windows PC to get your printer connected.

The printer will normally connect to a router, where other devices can print through the router.
If you are trying to set up the printer through an Android device the troubleshooting steps in the document here may help. The document here discusses Mopria issue resolution.
Wifi direct is a different connection method. In wifi direct the device connects directly to an access point provided by the printer, the router is not involved.
I have not used wifi direct, I suspect it may be useful in situations where you want to give access to your printer but not your network.

Hello, @Steptoeing60
Let's try the steps below:
- On your printer, turn on Wi-Fi Direct by pressing
button.
- Now, on your Android mobile, go to settings - Wireless option.
- You will find few wireless networks available, look for the Deskjet 3730 and then try to connect to the same.
- If asked for a password, punch in 12345678 and press connect. That should get your printer connected to the wi-fi direct network of your printer.
Now, use the Mopria plugin to print, or download and install the HP print service plugin from the play store and then try to print.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Cheers 🙂

Thanks for the reply, I thought i was going mad.I've been doing it right, this doesn't work. I can print things, it this wifi direct won' recgnise the password , am i missing out really ,to what advange getting this working with i have? Now that i got your attention on my quest to try and solve the problem i use a chrome to see if that worked . and yes it seem to accept 12345678 great,a problem developed with the DIRECT -A8-HP DeskJet 3700 series takes wifi control, which thought would be ok, couldn't see the advantage of it on the chromebook (wifi direct that is), i didnt investigate it to capabilties fully as i'd only done this to see that the passwoord 12345678 was correct. After disconnecting the printer password it bullied its way to the top wifi spot knocking my home hub off its top wifi spot even though it wasn't set up have to put my password in repeatedly.Any thought on that? is it something to do with the poxy setting. the chromebook problem isnt so much of a problem. that a reboot will probably solve, thought it might be of interest with apps being developed on chrome books 57 thanks for help.
