Hi @rb120,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP printer is having trouble recognizing that Tray 2 is loaded with paper. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as paper type settings, sensor issues, or even a misalignment of the tray. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the problem:

1. Check Paper Tray and Paper

  • Make sure that the paper in Tray 2 is properly aligned and not exceeding the tray’s capacity. Adjust the paper guides so that they are snug against the paper without bending it.
  • Confirm that the paper type and size loaded in Tray 2 match the settings on your printer. Mismatched settings can cause the printer to think the tray is empty or incorrect.:
  • Remove Tray 2, check for any obstructions or issues, and then reinsert the tray firmly. Ensure it is fully seated in the printer.

2. Check Printer Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to the settings menu. Look for options related to paper trays and check that Tray 2 is correctly configured.
  • Make sure Tray 2 is set as the default tray or configured for specific types of print jobs as required. This can usually be adjusted in the printer’s settings menu.

3. Clean Paper Sensors

  • Paper sensors are usually located near the paper path and can be sensitive to dust or paper debris.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the paper sensors. Be careful not to dislodge or damage any components.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Firmware updates can resolve bugs and improve printer performance.
  • Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.

5. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Look for any signs of damage or wear on Tray 2 and the paper path. Ensure there are no obstructions.
  • Try loading a different type or brand of paper in Tray 2 to see if the issue persists. Sometimes specific paper types can cause detection issues.

6. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • If available, perform a hard reset according to the printer’s manual. This can sometimes clear minor software glitches.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
