I am having the same problem, but while my computer is connected by WiFi, my printer is not.  I have an Ethernet cable connecting the printer to the Router, so the help suggestions on this linked page don’t apply.  My desktop (also connected by Ethernet to the router) didn’t ask for a passcode when I set up the printer.  I’d appreciate any suggestions.  Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. Thank you for posting on HP Forums, MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP printer that is connected via an ethernet cable to the router. Your computers are connected via wifi to the router. I read that it is asking fot a passcode to connect to the printer.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • What is the exact product model no? This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l
  • Is it attempting to connect to the wifi network or the printer's network? Printer's network is called as the Wifi Direct network using which you can directly connect to the printer without any other network.

In case it is the wifi direct printer then you may enter the passcode as 12345678.

Hope this helps. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

Thank you for your quick response!  My printer is a C309a all-in-one.  I ended up deleting its definition from my computer, downloading the full driver pack, and reinstalling.  I chose ‘Wired’ setup and Windows didn’t ask me for a passcode.  So, I suspect I chose wireless last time (since the PC is wireless).  If I get this message again, I’ll try the passcode you suggest.

You're most welcome. 🙂

Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue by you. Kudos to you for that. Glad to know that the issue is fixed.

I hope our printer remains healthy and serves you for a long time.

Happy printing! 🙂

Hi,

I also have a HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m. I have the same problem connecting to WIFI. USB connect is fine but when I try to connect to WIFI it asks for a printer passcode. I tried 12345678 and it told me it wasnt right.

Never mind. This has to do updating from Windows 8 to Windows 10. I noticed that the HP installer thought my system was still Windows 8 but I had updated it to Windows 10. I deleted my HP install, downloaded the latest and reinstalled. Problem no longer exists.
