I just discovered today that I was having the same problem as noted below...after the last Windows 10 update, my Samsung M2070 printer/scanner wouldn't scan and send to my computer and I was getting the same error message noted below..."I/O error while communicating with the device..."
I found the webpage below with instructions on how to rollback to Windows 10 (1709) from the latest update which is Windows 10 (1803) The brief instructions under the heading, "Roll Back to Windows 10 1709" worked perfectly. I'm happily scanning again (crucial for my work.) Hope this helps some of you with the same problem.

I have a Xpress C480W SL-C480W/SEE. Same problem.
I have discovered a work around:
Press Scan on the printer control panel.
Insert a USB key in thze front of the printer
Then select Scan to USB.
Remove USB & insert in PC.
I get a correct PDF copy of my document.
