Hang on! A simple uninstall of the printer software was not sufficient. I uninstalled using Revo Uninstaller which also thoroughly cleans the register and any left overs.

Then I reinstalled and that did the trick.

Hang on again! The problem popped up again! There definitely is some kind of issue! After closing the scanning software and opening it again saving 600 dpi images worked again. But the software seems unstable.

I thouroughly uninstalled the printer software and reinstalled it. The issue seems to have been solved now, after some Windows updates. I have the feeling the instability was caused by a Windows update.
