The microfilter has been attached in the phone cable line from the beginning. I switched out the phone cable from the printer to the wall jack with a known working phone line cable. HURRAY This was the fix. I assume the cable I was using was the wrong cable. The two cables physically appear to have different number of wire conductors. HP Support has been a great help with many suggestions. Thanks.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, when you're trying to fax it gives an error message "Trying to connect"

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

  • Try resending the fax.
  • Try faxing to another fax number.
  • Check for a dial tone on the phone line by pressing the Send Fax button.
  • Check that the telephone cord is securely connected by unplugging and reconnecting the cord.
  • Make sure that you are using the telephone cord that came with the product.
  • Make sure that the phone is working by disconnecting the product, plugging in a telephone to the phone line, and making a voice call.
  • Connect the product to a different phone line.
  • Set the fax resolution to Standard instead of the default of Fine.

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead!

I printed out a Printer Status report it indicates 14 fax sent and 4 recieved. I have no idea when or how long its been since it worked. I am using Basic fax setup I have it setup for Tone dial. I have tried to fax without phone line plugged into fax. When I plug in the phone line I get a Phone line in use message on display is that normal? The only item pluged into a phone line and is on at this time is the DSL modem. I assume it is the original phone cable it appears to be a 4 conductor cable. I tried a different fax number to fax to didnt work. When I hit fax it dials the number then starts beeping. The display says dialing. after a minute display says no answer and prints out a report indicating NO answer. The phone line works it is the same line my dsl modem is plugged into,

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Have you tried troubleshooting from my previous post?

Did you try Restore fax settings to default?

If not, I suggest you try those steps and let me know 🙂

Cheers!

yes, I have previously restored the Fax settings to default. I just tried that fix again still no luck. I unplugged all phones and the DSL modem from main phone line jacks. Leaving only the fax pluged into wall jack still no connection to phone line. Reading the HP troubleshooting page. I see where the problem might be the fact that I'm trying to connect with DSL and to contact my phone compant and see if my phone system supports FAX. I know my perviou answer to you was yes in the past year it worked. My wife tells me this printer has never been able to FAX.

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @Flower_Bud, as the tech is out for the day,

that said, I have reviewed your concern and the entire conversation, did some research and here's what I recommend:

If you have a DSL/ADSL modem connected to your phone line for your Internet, you should be able to fax over the same phone line. To improve the chance of successful faxes, connect a microfilter to the same phone cord that connects to the printer’s 1-LINE connector. Obtain microfilters from your Internet Service Provider. If the DSL modem is shared on the same phone as the printer, then use a phone splitter to connect the two devices.

  1. Wall jack

  2. DSL/ADSL microfilter

  3. Parallel splitter

  4. DSL/ADSL modem

Once set up using the microfilter among others, please initiate the setup fax wizard again, followed by a fax test > Please reply with the result of the fax test so that I may have the same validated and help you resolve the issue accordingly.

Keep us posted,

(We shall troubleshoot as a team, fight till the end and emerge - "victorious")
