My scanner now has a thick black bar that runs the length of a scanned document when scanning through the plate glass. When I look at the scanning rod I don't see any burned out bulbs, but it looks like something on that rod has gone bad. The printer is out of warranty so I would like to repair it by myself if possible. I'm not sure how to order the part I need or to replace the bad part.

Do you get the same defect when scanning through the automatic document feeder?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I get the same defect when scanning through the automatic document feeder, as shown below. But the black bar cuts off at the 11 inch mark instead of continuing to the 14 inch mark. (Somehow the second image got rotated. The black bar should be on the left side in both images.)
I spoke with HP Support and they agree it is a hardware problem. They referred me to an HP Authorized Service Provider. None of them offer repair services to individuals like me, just businesses.
