Operating System: macOS 10.15 Catalina

HP Office Jet Pro 6978 ADF will not feed for scan or copying.  Message on the screen states that "The document feeder was not able to pick up the original."  How do I fix it?  Is it hardware or software?  Is my unit shot? Do I need a new one?
